چکیده

The lobes of the NASA ULDB pumpkin-shaped super-pressure balloons are made of a thin polymeric film that shows considerable time-dependent behaviour. A nonlinear viscoelastic model based on experimental measurements has been recently established for this film. This paper presents a simulation of the viscoelastic behaviour of ULDB balloons with the finite element software ABAQUS. First, the standard viscoelastic modelling capabilities available in ABAQUS are examined, but are found of limited accuracy even for the case of simple uniaxial creep tests on ULDB films. Then, a nonlinear viscoelastic constitutive model is implemented by means of a userdefined subroutine. This approach is verified by means of biaxial creep experiments on pressurized cylinders and is found to be accurate provided that the film anisotropy is also included in the model. A preliminary set of predictions for a single lobe of a ULDB is presented at the end of the paper. It indicates that time-dependent effects in a balloon structure can lead to significant stress redistribution and large increases in the transverse strains in the lobes. 2008 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of COSPAR.

Shape Optimization of “Pumpkin” Balloons

This paper is concerned with the optimization of the cutting pattern for the lobes of pumpkin-shaped balloon structures. Pumpkin balloons, currently developed for the NASA Ultra-Long Duration Balloon (ULDB), consist of stiff meridional tendons that constrain a thin plastic film. The present study shows that the maximum stability of pumpkin balloons is reached if their surface area is minimized ...

Modelling of Anisotropic Viscoelastic Behaviour in Super-Pressure Balloons

Large balloon structures are made of thin anisotropic polymeric film that shows considerable time-dependent material behaviour. While the material has been fully characterised and a detailed time-dependent material description by means of a nonlinear viscoelastic Schapery material model is available, there is no suitable numerical implementation for finite element analysis. This paper presents ...

Implementation and Validation of Schapery-Rand Anisotropic Viscoelasticity Model for Super-Pressure Balloons

The thin film used for the NASA Ultra Long Duration Balloons (ULDB) shows considerable time-dependent behaviour. Furthermore, experiments on scaled ULDB balloons have revealed that wrinkles are present over a wide range of pressures. A numerical model has been developed describing the nonlinear anisotropic viscoelastic material behaviour by means of a Schapery-type model and this model has been...

A soluble fibre gel produced from rice bran and barley flour as a fat replacer in Asian foods

A hydrocolloidal fibre composite made from rice bran and barley flour, called Ricetrim, was found to have similar rheological properties to coconut cream. Coconut cream displayed a very narrow region of linear viscoelastic behaviour, both above and below strain values of 0.1%, the oscillatory shear modulus dropped sharply with increasing strain, indicating non-linear viscoelastic behaviour. Thi...

Computation of Buckling Pressure of Pumpkin Balloons

This paper is concerned with the elastic buckling of pumpkin-shaped balloon structures. Pumpkin balloons, currently being used in the NASA Ultra-Long Duration Ballooning (ULDB) Program, consist of stiff meridional tendons that constrain a thin, highly curved plastic surface. The present study exploits the high degree of symmetry of this design by adopting a newly developed, closed form expressi...
